If you dream of exploring unspoiled landscapes and contemplating one of the most challenging mountains in the world, this trek is for you. The hike to Laguna Torre will take you through lush forests, valleys carved by glaciers, and meltwater rivers, culminating in a dreamlike setting with the majestic Cerro Torre reflected in its waters.
Itinerary
🚐 Departure from your hotel in El Calafate We start the tour early in the morning, taking Route 40, one of the most emblematic roads in Patagonia, bound for El Chaltén. During the journey, you can admire the immensity of the steppe and the silhouette of the Andes approaching on the horizon.
🥾 Start of the trek – Laguna Torre Trail Before starting the hike, we will give you an informative talk about the route, useful tips, and provide you with trekking poles and a route map. This trail is ideal for those looking for a challenging adventure, but without the extreme demands of Fitz Roy.
🌿 A dreamlike trail through forests and rivers From the very first kilometers, the trail immerses you in an unforgettable landscape. The total hike is 18 km (round trip) with gentle and accessible slopes for most of the route.
📍 Highlights of the tour:
✅ Torre Lookout Point (km 3.5): This panoramic viewpoint is the first major reward of the trail. From here, you will have a privileged view of the Fitz Roy River valley, with its turquoise waters winding between mountains. If the sky is clear, you will be able to see the imposing Cerro Torre for the first time.
✅ Lenga forests and De Agostini camp (km 8.5): As you continue, the trail enters forests of lenga and ñire trees, which are home to Patagonian birds such as the Magellanic woodpecker. On this stretch, you will cross crystal-clear streams and small wooden bridges until you reach the De Agostini camp, used by mountaineers who challenge themselves to climb Cerro Torre.
🏔 The grand finale: Laguna Torre and Glaciar Grande After about four hours of hiking, we arrived at Laguna Torre, one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Patagonia. Its cold waters, often decorated with floating icebergs, reflect the imposing granite peaks of Cerro Torre, Egger, and Standhardt, escorted by the impressive Glaciar Grande.
If you still have energy left, you can walk to the Maestri viewpoint, a short but scenic climb from where the famous Italian climber Cesare Maestri planned his historic (and controversial) expedition to Cerro Torre.
